My Journey to Teaching Maths

I have always enjoyed maths and problem-solving from an early age. However, I was not always the top student in maths at school and I remember finding certain concepts difficult. Because of this, I understand many of the challenges that children — and even adults — can face when trying to learn and gain confidence in maths.

I came into teaching later in life after previously working for major blue-chip companies. Having four children of my own, along with more than 10 years of coaching children’s football, helped me realise how much I enjoyed supporting and encouraging young people to grow in confidence and ability.

Combining this with my passion for maths and problem-solving, I decided to change careers and become a maths teacher. I worked hard gaining a Master Degree in Mathematics Education and developed my understanding of how children learn and the difficulties they need to overcome when learning maths effectively. For over a decade, I have taught maths to mixed-ability classes from primary level through to Year 13.

My Teaching Approach

My friendly teaching approach is centred around understanding how children learn and recognising why many students find maths difficult. Because I experienced challenges with certain maths concepts myself when I was younger, I am able to relate to students who may lack confidence or feel stuck with topics they have struggled with in the past.

I focus on breaking difficult or abstract concepts down into smaller, clear and manageable steps so that students can fully understand the reasoning behind the maths, rather than simply memorising methods. This helps students build stronger foundations and long-term confidence.

At the same time, I also know how to challenge students who already understand the basics and are ready to progress further. I encourage them to develop deeper problem-solving skills, think independently and tackle mathematical questions with confidence. Above all, I create a supportive and positive learning environment where students feel comfortable and able to find a love of maths.

The Inspiration Behind Scholars Maths

I was inspired to start Scholars Maths because I noticed that most online maths tuition focused on older students preparing for their GCSEs. While this support is important, I felt there was far less affordable, high-quality tuition available for younger secondary students who need support earlier on in their maths journey.

I strongly believe that building confidence and understanding in Year's 6–9 can make a huge difference before gaps in knowledge become bigger problems later on. By supporting students early, they are better prepared for secondary school, more confident in class, and less likely to struggle as maths becomes more challenging.

I also wanted to create a supportive learning opportunity for adults who may have struggled with maths themselves and either want to help their children more confidently or improve their own maths skills for equivalency tests, further education, or a new career opportunities. Scholars Maths was created to provide affordable, supportive, and accessible maths tuition for all.

What You Can Expect from Scholars Maths

At Scholars Maths, I want every student and parent to have a positive and rewarding experience. My goal is for students to leave lessons feeling more confident in their ability to tackle maths problems and approach learning with a more positive mindset.

Whether a student is building confidence with the basics or developing the skills to tackle more advanced and complex maths topics, I want them to feel supported, encouraged and capable of succeeding. I believe confidence is one of the most important factors in improving maths ability and I aim to help students realise that they can achieve far more than they may initially believe.

For parents, I hope Scholars Maths provides reassurance that their child is receiving high-quality support in a welcoming and structured environment where progress, confidence, and understanding are the main priorities.
